Sardinia's Costa Smeralda has been the launch pad for every VW Polo bar one since the first generation went on sale in 1975. It's a fitting match: Costa Smeralda translates as "emerald coast" and the Polo has been the little gem in VW's line-up since its inception.
Volkswagen has sold 10.6 million Polos worldwide, and to underline the model's importance, the launch was graced by the company's bigwigs, including none other than Prof Martin Winterkorn, head of the board of management for VW Group, who commented, "The Polo is the car that makes people really like VW as a brand." No pressure there, then.
On the morning of the launch, the sun bounced brightly off the thick whitewashed villas sitting low among the coastal rocks and orange trees, and from a pleasantly breezy hill, I watched red Polos kick up dust as they zoomed along the island's lanes.
This little car is very zoomy, with a keen sense of movement in the design. The new, meaner look for VW hatches made its first appearance on the revitalised Scirocco, with angry headlights and pinched lines. It moved on to the new Golf, where it is less pleasing, but now it has successfully transformed the new Polo.
It's a clever way to style up a car: the headlights are fussier, with a smoky black lining, and stretch around the bonnet to instil a sense of speed to the face of the car, while the back remains practically a blank canvas, two tail-lights sitting in a sheet of bodywork.
