Sardinia's Costa Smeralda has been the launch pad for every VW Polo bar one since the first generation went on sale in 1975. It's a fitting match: Costa Smeralda translates as "emerald coast" and the Polo has been the little gem in VW's line-up since its inception.
Volkswagen has sold 10.6 million Polos worldwide, and to underline the model's importance, the launch was graced by the company's bigwigs, including none other than Prof Martin Winterkorn, head of the board of management for VW Group, who commented, "The Polo is the car that makes people really like VW as a brand." No pressure there, then.
On the morning of the launch, the sun bounced brightly off the thick whitewashed villas sitting low among the coastal rocks and orange trees, and from a pleasantly breezy hill, I watched red Polos kick up dust as they zoomed along the island's lanes.
This little car is very zoomy, with a keen sense of movement in the design. The new, meaner look for VW hatches made its first appearance on the revitalised Scirocco, with angry headlights and pinched lines. It moved on to the new Golf, where it is less pleasing, but now it has successfully transformed the new Polo.
It's a clever way to style up a car: the headlights are fussier, with a smoky black lining, and stretch around the bonnet to instil a sense of speed to the face of the car, while the back remains practically a blank canvas, two tail-lights sitting in a sheet of bodywork.

Last week, Australian climber Lincoln Hall was left for dead by members of his team at the 28,543-foot level of Everest. Later, the SummitClimb North Ridge Expedition team passed by and found the not-dead Hall sitting cross-legged in the snow. That team abandoned its summit push and successfully got Hall down the mountain. SummitClimb member Myles Osborne, writing on www.Everestnews.com, tells about finding and rescuing Hall, and how he felt when he visited him in Advanced Base Camp the next day:
"The following day Lincoln had been brought back to ABC by a massive rescue effort involving several teams. We went over to visit this man of mystery we had found at 8600 metres, in his expedition's medical tent. We reintroduced ourselves and sat there talking about his family and wife. During the conversation, I could not help but wonder, 'How in ANY way is a summit more important than saving a life?' And the answer is that it isn't. But in this skewed world up here, sometimes you can be fooled into thinking that it might be. But I know that trying to sleep at night knowing that I summitted Everest and left a guy to die isn't something I ever want to do. The summit's always there after all."

The Veyron Super Sport features an engine power increase from the standard 1,001 metric horsepower (736 kW; 987 bhp) to 1,200 metric horsepower (883 kW; 1,184 bhp) and torque of 1,500 N·m (1,100 ft·lbf) and a revised aerodynamic package.[4] It was shown publicly for the first time at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in August 2010.[3]
Bugatti's official test driver Pierre Henri Raphanel drove the Super Sport version of the Veyron on Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessien high-speed oval to establish the car's top speed. With representatives of the Guinness Book of Records and German Technical Inspection Agency (TÜV) on hand, Raphanel made passes around the big oval in both directions achieving an average maximum speed of 431.072 km/h (267.856 mph).[4] Once produced for sale, the first five Super Sports will sport the same black and orange finish as the first production car, which was used to set the speed record, and all production models will be electronically limited to 415 km/h (258 mph) to protect the tires.[4]
